Can you wear glasses in a passport photo?
There is no single answer, and the split is not what most sites suggest. Some authorities ban glasses outright — including for people who wear them every day — while others allow clear corrective lenses as long as the eyes stay visible. Below is what each authority actually writes.
There is no international rule here. An authority that bans them does not make an exception for people who wear glasses daily.
Not allowed — 5 countries
🇳🇬 Nigeria — Banned outright. The rule changed — older guidance allowed them.

🇵🇭 Philippines — Removed before the photo is taken at the counter.
“Eyeglasses should always be removed before capturing the applicant’s photo.”
🇮🇩 Indonesia — Staff will ask you to take them off at the immigration office.

🇻🇳 Vietnam — Tinted or clear, both are refused.

🇵🇰 Pakistan — The eyes must be shown with no glasses on.

🇵🇱 Poland — Corrective glasses are explicitly allowed — three conditions attached.

🇯🇵 Japan — Clear lenses only. Reflections, and frames over the eyes, are what fail.

🇪🇸 Spain — Clear lenses, thin frames, no shadow on the face.
“Las gafas deberán ser de cristales claros. No se aceptan las fotos con reflejos en los cristales. La montura no debe cubrir el centro del ojo o el párpado ni proyectar una sombra sobre la cara.”
🇮🇳 India — Dark or coloured lenses fail; glare is to be avoided by tilting the head.

Which countries ban glasses in passport photos outright?
Of the authorities we checked, Nigeria, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Pakistan refuse photos with glasses of any kind. Nigeria states the rule changed — older guidance permitted them.
I wear glasses every day. Does that make a difference?
Not in the countries that ban them. Unlike head coverings, where most authorities carve out a religious or medical exception in writing, none of the bans we read make an exception for everyday corrective glasses.
What actually fails in the countries that allow glasses?
Three things, repeatedly: light reflecting off the lenses, frames covering the eyes or eyebrows, and tinted lenses. Poland, Japan and Spain all name reflection specifically.
